A Thousand Poems Ask For You By Name

by Astara

Somewhere a star emerges
from a fierce burning love
and although it may take
five lifetimes or more
for the light to reach us
like a spectacular firework,
I imagine that the sound travels faster
and emotion faster still.

Words reach me first
and a thousand poems
ask for you by name.

I’m walking this crisp dark night alone
lit up by hundreds of little stars
strung up and down the neighborhood
coloring houses, trees, and bushes.
Their soft glow keeps me company.

Words,
my other abundant companions,
urge me on.
They recreate your face,
your mouth, your lips, your hands.

You inhabit even my solitude.
How do I describe this motion of one foot
in front of the other
as each step of my heart
offers warm thoughts of you
to ease the biting wind.

The ice glimmers in the house lights
as I still hear you sound out my name.
I wear you like a soft warm coat
wrapping myself in the words you
gave me over the phone.

We have traveled lifetimes,
an eternity of long nights,
dark meanderings, and lessons
just to see each other’s breath
condense again in the cold air
to feel the warmth of that star
whisper on the horizon
you you you you you.
